Why count words in the browser instead of a document editor?

Editors count words, but they rarely tell you what you need when writing for a constraint: how the text reads aloud, whether it fits a meta description, or which phrase you have repeated six times. This counter updates on every keystroke with counts, timing estimates, live limit tracking for common platforms, and a keyword breakdown that ignores stop words. It runs locally, so drafts, client copy, and unpublished writing stay on your machine.

How does the tool count a word?
A word is any run of characters separated by whitespace, which matches how word processors and editors count. Hyphenated terms like "state-of-the-art" count as one word, and numbers count as words too.
What counts as a sentence or a paragraph?
Sentences are counted by terminal punctuation (. ! ? and the ellipsis character), so abbreviations like "e.g." can inflate the count slightly. Paragraphs are blocks of text separated by a blank line, and lines are counted by every line break.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The counter runs entirely in your browser with no network requests, no analytics on your input, and no storage. Closing the tab discards the text.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time assumes 238 words per minute, the average silent reading speed for adult prose in published research. Speaking time assumes 140 words per minute, a comfortable presentation pace. Both are estimates: dense technical writing reads slower.
What is keyword density used for?
Keyword density shows which words appear most often as a share of total words, which is useful when editing SEO copy or checking that you are not repeating a phrase. Common stop words such as "the" and "and" are filtered out.
